Our fajita journey ended at the place where it all originated. Chili’s opened its first chain in Kolkata with this outlet a couple of years back. Located in the Quest Mall ( a place which I believe makes most money from the food I believe than selling clothes & stuff), this one is probably the most popular outlet among the three they have in Kolkata . Though the place is quite spacious, even on weekdays the outlet remains surprisingly full. Personally I shy away from this particular mall, as it’s too expensive (even the inox movie tickets are too damn high!). Add to that the exorbitantly high parking charges (20 rs / hr for two-wheeler, I’m not going back in Quest of anything).
Coming to the invite, the management had invited us to try the ongoing fajita festival. The special festival menu has a selection of delicious Tex-Mex style make yourself tacos along with a starter, a festival special cocktail & dessert. The festival runs until the end of November. We tried each & every item from the special menu, a short description of which is given in the blog.
Tequila White Sangria:
The only drink on the special menu apart from their regular fizzy or milk based drinks. Tequila & white wine shaken with triple sec & fresh lime juice served in a wine glass. The concoction is topped with sprite. To say the truth I like tequila as a shooter, & mixing it in any cocktail seems to dilute the whole thing. However the taste was pretty good with the lemony tang.
Diced cauliflower coated in thin batter & deep-fried to a crisp texture. The crunchy batter along with the juicy inner make for an interesting combo. The dish was drizzled with some cottage cheese which provided a welcome variation.
Roasted Pepper Chicken Fajitas:
Two juicy chicken breasts sliced up & served on a smoking hot iron skillet. Cooked in an amazing cheesy red pepper sauce with fresh cilantro & roasted jalapeño the chicken tasted heavenly along with the cooked onion rings.
Roasted Shrimp Fajita:
Juicy big sized grilled shrimps placed on a bed of cooked onion rings along with cherry tomatoes. The dish also included some cooked & mashed chicken sausage, pineapple Pico de gallo & tangy lime sauce. Topped with the signature jalapeño , this one easily became my favorite. I mean you can’t surely resist a shrimp sizzler? Can you? I didn’t even need the tortilla breads to have this. One after another I worked through the shrimps merrily.
Sea Food Fajita:
This one’s much like the previous one. the only thing you get extra is a thick slice of basa along with about half the no. of juicy shrimps with cooked onion rings & cherry tomatoes tossed in Pico de gallo & tangy chili sauce. The juicy fish was really soft, while the shrimps were smoky, flavorful. This one I wrapped into a taco & munched away.
Queso Fundido Fajitas ( Chicken / tenderloin beef):
You want a chicken fajita. You can have that. You want a beef one, have that. Can’t decide which one you want to have? Order the combo. This is like best of both worlds. In place of two chicken breasts, you get one chicken breast along with one beef steak all sliced up conveniently.
This time we settled for the combo dish. The chicken breast & beef steak was sliced up for convenience & were placed on a bed of onion rings, and coated in garlic queso fundido, tangy chili sauce & topped with the roasted jalapeño. I rolled up both chicken & beef pieces in one taco, & it felt quite unique due to the difference in texture of the meats.
Sizzling Veggie Fajita:
Assortment of sliced & diced exotic veggies on a sizzling hot iron skillet. You may find it more of a salad. Mushrooms, Zucchini, bell peppers, onions etc all juicy & bursting with flavors lightly grilled with mild spices. To say the truth, this was a bit let down after so many meat dishes. I would not recommend it, however order if you are a fan of grilled veggies.
Crunchy Chocolate Puff:
A warm crisp hand-crafted chocolate served along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, with some chocolate syrup drizzled on top. The flaky puff hides beneath itself a portion of warm gooey mashed brownie. A welcome change from regular brownie, the sugar dusted puff will leave you craving for more!
All in all it was a great meal. And after this my love for fajitas has grown manifold. I’ll surely be going back to chili’s for fajitas at least, as they are the only ones serving them in Kolkata. Special mention also goes out to their Tenderloin steaks & honey drizzled baby back pork ribs, to say nothing about the amazingly juicy & tasty blackened salmon. It’s just a matter of time before I visit them again,
Until then happy eating,
